Mercedes combines thermal and electric engines in one model!

Ana sayfa / News

Mercedes-Benz is planning a major strategic change for the S-Class and its electric version, the EQS, in the luxury segment. In an interview with Autocar, the company’s CEO Ola Källenius announced that these two models will be combined under the S-Class name by 2030. This move means that both internal combustion engine and fully electric options will be offered under the same name. Here are the details…

The decision was shaped by Mercedes’ review of its targets in the electric vehicle market. In 2023, the company’s goal was for electric vehicles to reach 20% of total sales, but this rate remained at only 11%. This rate led Mercedes-Benz to postpone its forecast that electric and hybrid vehicle sales would reach 50% in 2025 to 2030.

Mercedes plans significant technical updates for the EQS model. In the second half of 2025, the current 400V electrical architecture will be switched to 800V architecture. This change will significantly reduce charging time, allowing it to reach 10% to 80% charge in just 10 minutes . In addition, the 118 kWh battery will offer a range of 860 km in the most efficient version with its new chemical structure.

Mercedes plans to renew the S-Class in 2026. This update will include innovations in the exterior design and advanced features such as the MBUX super display in the interior . At the same time, the 4-liter V8 biturbo engine will be combined with 48V mild-hybrid technology. In addition, the third-level autonomous driving capabilities of the S-Class’s new Drive Pilot system will also be updated.

By combining these two flagship models, Mercedes-Benz aims to meet both traditional and modern needs at the same time. The meeting of electric and thermal models under the same roof could be a turning point in the automotive industry.
